Tired of feeling tired all the time? For many of us, feeling groggy and under-the-weather, no matter what the time of year, is so common, it almost a way of life. Just think about it. When was the last time you felt full of energy and ready to take on whatever challenge comes your way? Overwhelmed with stress and responsibilities, we soldier on, fighting brain-fog and exhaustion with caffeine and sugar to prop ourselves up long enough to make it through the day. Then, when it gets to bedtime we’re too frazzled to sleep. Small wonder so many of us are physically, emotionally and mentally depleted.
The good news is that you don’t have to live like this. Simply by living a little smarter and making a few health-supporting choices every day, you can feel more uplifted and energized. Try incorporating this Re-Energise Ritual into your mornings and see your mood and spirits soar.
This ritual involves an energizing yoga flow, an uplifting aromatherapy shower followed by a nutritious breakfast and green tea. So plan ahead, lay your yoga clothes and mat out the night before, make sure you have some energizing essential oils or a revitalizing body wash to use, go shopping for some delicious breakfast ingredients and stock up on green tea.
If you’re really not a morning person, give this ritual a chance by setting yourself a goal of following it through every morning for a week. Exercising in the morning offers amazing benefits both to your energy levels and your overall wellbeing, setting you up for a healthy day ahead. It also creates a strong sense of self discipline and encourages a good night’s sleep, so consequently, you’ll have more energy the following day. We're not saying it's going to be easy setting your alarm an hour earlier but just wait and see – it doesn’t take too long before healthy mornings become a habit.
1. Energising Yoga Flow
Just 30 minutes is enough time to set a daily intention, stretch your body, raise your heart rate and start each day feeling healthy and accomplished. Begin with five rounds of Sun Salutations, then perform this energizing flow on each side of the body.
Three Legged Dog to Crescent Lunge Twist
From Downward Dog, inhale to reach the right leg up towards the sky. Exhale, and step the foot in between your hands. Inhale and reach your arms up over head. Take a few breaths here, lengthening the spine and expanding through the chest. Exhale and bring the left hand down to the floor. Engage your inner thighs, inhale and reach the right arm up, twisting over to the right. Lift the gaze and look beyond the right fingertips, then exhale to lower the arm and step back to downward facing dog. Repeat this sequence on the left side.
Revolved Downward Facing Dog
Now, take a twist in your downward facing dog. Bring the right hand about half-way toward the back of the mat, twisting to the side. Reach for the outer edge of the left leg; the thigh, calf or ankle (the lower down toward the heel you reach, the deeper the twist). Relax the back of your neck and breathe deeply, then release and do the same thing on the opposite side.
Shift your weight over to the left foot, bringing the right knee to your chest. Circle the right foot a couple of times, find your balance and then move into Tree Pose by placing the sole of the foot to the inner calf or thigh, bringing the knee out to the side but keeping the hip in neutral. Reach your arms over head and balance for a few breaths, and then do the other side.
2. Take an Uplifting Aromatherapy Shower
Instantly energizing, a morning shower can be a great wake-up call especially if you choose a revitalizing body wash infused with zesty essential oils and revitalising herbs. Look out for nature’s energizers: Basil, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Peppermint.
3. Eat a Super Nutritious Nutritious Breakfast
Smashed-avo on wholemeal toast, poached eggs and sourdough, porridge topped with seeds and berries…we all love a great breakfast recipe and know a nutritious meal first thing sets us up for a healthy, productive day but finding the time is tricky. Again this is where your earlier alarm call comes in. If you’re rushed in the mornings, it’s easy to reach for nutrient-poor, sugary cereals or quick fixes like a croissants made from refined carbohydrates. By mid-morning you’re starving because these foods are quickly digested, giving a burst of energy that is often swiftly followed by a drop in blood sugar levels - which in turn, leaves us grabbing snacks to satisfy our hunger. The key to overcoming this snacking pattern, is to eat a breakfast that contains slow-release carbohydrates (to maintain steady energy levels) as well as a little protein, and healthy fats to keep us feeling fuller for longer.
4. Drink Green and Clean
Green tea, green smoothies, green juice…When you need an energy boost, it's not only what you’re eating but also what you're drinking that that you need to focus on. To super-charge energy reserves, you can’t beat green drinks. Firstly, green tea. Switch your regular coffee for green tea and you’ll get a slight wake-up but none of the jitters (or teeth-staining) of full-on caffeinated coffee or the extra calories if you take your coffee sweet and/or milky, plus green tea is packed with antioxidants. As for green smoothies and juices, you can’t beat them for delivering nourishing, high-octane, drinkable doses of phytonutrients, antioxidants and digestive enzymes to every system in the body, quickly, easily and efficiently
