Farewell 2016 - my favourite rituals for letting go and moving on

As we begin to look back on this year, we realize that so many things can change in a moment, a day and a year. It has been the year that we learnt to take nothing for granted. It may have been unsettling but we can rest assured that some things remain constant including our ability to live lives filled with love, compassion and kindness. Enjoy these beautiful rituals, which will bring closure as they prepare you for the new. NamasteLucy How do you welcome in the New Year? Do you choose to celebrate with a big party, quietly at home with a loved one or perhaps by taking a solitary walk along a windswept beach, maybe you have yet to decide? What unites us, however, is the need to say goodbye to what has...

How I am planning to fill the holidays with gratitude & joy

There are so many reasons to love the holidays, there are even more reasons to be grateful. It’s the time of year to give, share, love and express appreciation for everything we are blessed with. Here’s a few of the ways I intend to express gratitude over holidays – hope you find the suggestions inspiring. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a sending you a very big thank you for being part of our Calmia community.   Namaste,  Lucy  What do you love about Christmas? For me, it’s big family meals, mulled wine by the fire, ice-rinks and twinkling fairy lights, wrapping up warm and going for long walks and not having to hurry out of the house every morning to get to school on time. As the year draws to a...

How I keep my energy levels high when life gets hectic

How I keep my energy levels high when life gets hectic

At busy times like these, when my diary is over-scheduled and everything and everybody needs my attention, its easy to start feeling run down and low on energy. While my responsibilities and obligations might not be letting up any time soon, I know there are a few simple things I can do to replenish my energy levels throughout the day rather than propping myself up with coffee. Here’s how I keep my ‘prana’ flowing.... MorningStart hydrating: drinking water helps our bodies perform at their best and sipping first thing gives our digestive system a kick start and starts energising our whole body. I keep water by my bedside and then follow up with a mug of hot water and lemon. Eat smart: choosing a...

My 5 top tips to have a more restful Christmas

My 5 top tips to have a more restful Christmas

Feeling frazzled, overwhelmed and super-stressed? It’s not surprising, Christmas may be the most wonderful time of the year but it’s also the busiest - we have to find the perfect gifts, organize family events, attend endless social gatherings, not to mention packing up the house and travelling long distances while eating too much, drinking too much and exercising less than usual. Somehow we manage to stay in one piece but it’s certainly not easy to look after our wellbeing, maintain our yoga practice or keep our immune systems strong considering everything else we have to do. However, with a little prioritizing and a bigger emphasis on enjoying simple pleasures than striving for festive perfection – it...

My Wellness Guide

My Wellness Guide

I am often asked what I do to nurture my own wellbeing. People are keen to know if I practice yoga every day, if I drink coffee and whether I follow a particular diet. While I’m flattered by the intrigue my holistic lifestyle generates, I hope I won’t disappoint when I admit that I don’t have time for yoga every day, I do enjoy a flat-white in the morning and although I eat as clean as possible I don’t follow a particular regime. For me, improving my wellbeing is all about taking a holistic, balanced approach to my mind, body and spirit rather than discipline, guilt or denial. These days, I’m more concerned about the way I feel than the way I look - that doesn’t mean I don’t want to look good, it’s just...

My Yoga Journey
Posted on 11th November 2016, by Lucy Wakefield

My Yoga Journey

I have been practicing yoga for a long time now, a really long time - 20 years, in fact. It is a journey I began for a number of different reasons. Firstly, I needed a workout that would counterbalance the accelerating pace of my demanding work schedule. Secondly, I was writing more about natural beauty products and organic ingredients, and my research into these alongside complementary therapies was leading me to taking a more holistic approach to my wellness. Lastly, if I’m honest I was seduced by the amazing definition of Madonna’s arm muscles, which at the time were apparently attributed to her daily yoga practice.  I remember my very first yoga class, in minute detail. A strict Iyengar class, where...
