What I pack for a yoga retreat

What I pack for a yoga retreat

I find packing for any kind of holiday - even one I am really excited about going on - very stressful. What will the weather be like? How can I decide now what I want to be wearing in a week’s time? Will the vibe be more hippie or sport-luxe? Will I be practicing yoga exclusively or should I pack some workout kit too? Will I be expected to dress up in the evening? Should I squish everything into a carry-on or check a suitcase? Should I take my beloved yoga mat in a sling and risk endless security questions or pack a travel mat I can fold in my case? So much to think about…. To minimize the stress, I have created a list to help me pack wisely and lightly. We all know that less is more when it comes to...

7 ways to stress less

7 ways to stress less

I’d like to think that I’m pretty in tune with my wellbeing needs – I know when I need to slow down, when I need to boost my body with extra nutrients, when I need to nurture myself with yoga, not challenge it with weights and I can detect depletion pretty far in advance of actually running myself down – but recently, despite my usual spidey-senses, I’ve been feeling more emotional and stressed out than usual and it’s building up into an anxiety and low-level wellness concerns and health problems. From not feeling hungry to drinking too much coffee, from over-exercising to late night email checking, my normal balanced routine has become unsettled. The result - mouth ulcers, uncharacteristic headaches,...

How I finally started meditating

How I finally started meditating

I'd like to say that after 20 years of yoga and holistic living that I have discovered the secret of sitting still in silence for 30 minutes everyday and that meditation is part of my daily routine without fail. But that wouldn’t be true and that's not good karma. Over the years I have tried various approaches to achieving mindfulness and I’ve come to conclusion that there isn’t one perfect technique or ideal time of day for me to meditate so I stopped being obsessed with what I thought meditation should look like and started focusing on how I could make it work for me.  For a long time, I tried setting my alarm earlier (according to their interviews that’s what all the successful...

How to embrace ageing

How to embrace ageing

I started my working career in a business that must bear a large part of the responsibility for how we, as a society, view ageing – the world of glossy magazines. Everything was exciting, beautiful and always new – the latest serum, the hottest lip shade, the best anti-ageing treatment. On practically every page, the message boiled down to its most basic essence was basically buy this and your looks and lifestyle will improve. Everything was about denying the ageing process and staying smooth-skinned and looking twenty-five forever - like the models we used in our photo shoots. While this world was very glamorous and seductive – I always knew in my heart-of-hearts, the beauty department wasn’t for me as I...

My healthy travel hacks

My healthy travel hacks

I feel healthy, have bags of energy and cope with most challenges life throws my way. Except, when I travel. Travelling wrecks me, both physically and emotionally, and leaves me completely out of balance. Air travel is draining and disastrous. Road travel, almost as bad. And don’t even mention boats – feel sea sick just looking at one. Trains are passable - probably, because I can get up and walk about.I’m not just talking about feeling jet-lagged after a long-distance flight to New York, even a quick hop over to Greece makes me feel and look terrible and a two hour car journey for a weekend away leaves me tight and tetchy. However, exciting the end destination or meaningful the reason for travelling...
